Papa Francis The First | His Holiness Papa Francisco

About Pope Francis I (The First)

Papa Francis, born on 17 December 1936 to Mario José Bergoglio and his wife Regina María Sivori as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was elected on 13 March 2013 as the 266th pope of the Catholic Church. He is also the head of the Church and Sovereign of the Vatican City State, and holds the other titles of Bishop of Rome, Viscar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the State of Vatican City and Servant of the Servants of God.

Living his life in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was ordained as a priest in 1969. The story goes that he was seeing a girl, and told her that if she does not want to marry him, he will follow along his path as a priest. By 1998 he became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and in 2001 Bergoglio became a cardinal. He stayed dedicated to Argentina until 28 February 2013, when Pope Benedict XVI (The 16th) resigned due to health reasons, and Bergoglio was elected by the conclave to be the next Pope. Jorge Bergoglio chose the papal name Francisco in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, whom he respected for taking the vow of poverty, even though his life was promised to be easy for being a son of a wealthy merchant. For taking that vow, he was the founder of the Franciscan order, which Pope Francis follows by keeping his steel cross.

"And now let us begin this journey, the Bishop and people, this journey of the Church of Rome, which presides in charity over all the Churches, a journey of brotherhood in love, of mutual trust. Let us always pray for one another. Let us pray for the whole world that there might be a great sense of brotherhood.

I will now give my blessing to you and to the whole world, to all men and women of good will."

-Papa Francis quote

He does not know you, yet he prays for you.
He will most likely never meet you, yet he loves you.

This is your chance to show your love, for as the Bible teaches, "Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven."
